Director's Note

Welcome to Schoolhouse Arts Center! Thank you for choosing to spend a few hours with us and for supporting live theatre! You being here really means so much to us! My first experience with Bye Bye Birdie was my senior year of high school when I played Mrs. MacAfee. Revisiting it 35 years later I had the response that I have with many things from years ago, “that didn’t age well!” Reading through the script, I questioned whether or not we should do a golden age musical with characters and ideas that are both racist and misogynistic. I came to the conclusion that it’s important to confront and discuss these issues and remember that it’s not the world we want to foster or live in. There are many people in our community that can relate to what these characters are experiencing. Let’s learn from the past, and honestly the present and build a world that celebrates all people. As we travel back to 1958, we remember an idealized world in so many ways, with glimpses of the ugliness that is there. It is in this idealized world that we find characters that really capture the stereotypes we hold about the 1950s. In directing this show, I wanted to lean heavily into that idea, bringing the audience back to the time of Elvis and to the jumping off point of so many important social movements, while trying to hold onto the past, not unlike the world we find ourselves in today.  It is my hope that we can come together to celebrate what makes each of us unique and build a vibrant community as we move into the future. We’ve got a lot of livin’ to do!
